Lessons in Climate Adaptation From Florida鈥檚 Hurricane Recovery
When Hurricane Ian hit Florida in late September 2022, it took more than 100 lives, becoming the to hit the United States since Katrina in 2005. Hurricane Ian also caused in Florida of any storm in history, and was the third costliest in the U.S. as a whole.
The storm also caused a massive loss of housing. In a state where developers were engaged in predatory behavior even before Ian, how have people been rebuilding in the intersection between climate change and disaster capitalism? Her forthcoming book is called聽Talking About Abolition聽(Seven Stories Press, 2025). Sonali is co-director of the nonprofit group, Afghan Women鈥檚 Mission which she helped to co-found in 2000. She has a Master鈥檚 in Astronomy from the University of Hawai鈥檌, and two undergraduate degrees in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin.
